Lancaster is unlike the other three boarders of Mantua, which simply look like regular streets inside the neighborhood. 40th Street, Hamilton and Mantua avenues look far more residential in comparison to the bustling of Lancaster Avenue.
It is difficult to assess if that is a good thing or not, however. Corner bodegas aside, almost all of the available food places in Mantua are located on Lancaster Avenue. Very few of these seem like healthy options. This is evidenced in the picture above, which shows a Church's Chicken/Citgo Gasstation combination. Most of the rest of the food options are fried takeout and Chinese Food.
As you continue down Lancaster Avenue, taking in all of the attractions, it becomes more clear that healthy options are going to be few and far between.
The Sunshine Food Market is typical of the kind of grocery markets found on Lancaster Avenue. African American Soul Cuisine was one of the few, if any, places that seemed available to eat in rather than take out greasy, fried foods.
The ride down Lancaster continued, looking for any type of healthy options for the citizens of Mantua. Also in mind was the fact that in all of our visits to the neighborhood a single drug store such as Rite Aid or CVS was found.
Finally, among many more corner markets and an odd market named Murray's we found the single drugstore within the confines of Mantua.
Therefore, as noticed by driving down Mantua's biggest business district and continuing to plow through the rows of brownstone homes that line the blocks it is evident that there is hardly any obtainable healthy options. Whether the options are supposed to be healthy food, or prescription drugs, or just general care Mantua is sorely lacking in all of these areas.
