SEPTA in Nicetown-Tioga

SEPTA has a presence in the Nicetown-Tioga area. The sounds of the subway and the sight of the buses is nothing out of the ordinary, but something that is a rarity is the regional rail. The only regional rail station in the Nicetown-Tioga area is Wayne Junction.

Wayne Junction is located on Wayne Avenue and touches Windrim and Germantown Ave as well. The station was built originally in 1881 and then rebuilt in the 1900s. The station is known for the lack of parking around it, which has turned many riders away from it. There is a ticket office located on the waiting platform, which saves you money if you buy your ticket before boarding your train. There are also two elevators located at the station to assist the handicap passengers reach the two separate platforms that are located at Wayne Junction. The two platforms, one going towards center city and the other going outward of the city, are separated by tracks. This is a mock off of the subway tracks that offer local and express rides.

There are a lot of lines that run to Wayne Junction. The Airport R1, Warminster and Wilmington/Newark R2, West Trenton R3, Landsdale/Doylestown and Paoil/Thorndale R5, Chestnut Hill East/Trenton R7, and Chestnut Hill West/Fox Chase R8 all make their way into the station.
Many of the riders are residents of the Nicetown-Tioga who work outside of the area and find the regional rail to be the easiest way to arrive at their destination. One rider, Mary DiMichael, works at the airport part time and says riding the R1 from Wayne Junction is the best way for her to get to work. “I love this station,” DiMichael said. “I can walk here from my house and feel safe. It is the best.”
