By: Steve Baro, Scott Fender and Cortney LairdHaving a population exceeding ten thousand that consists of mostly adolescents causes a demand for educational facilities. When the public school system can't accommodate or interest everyone, Fairhill came prepared.
Fairhill Community High School is an alternative to Philadelphia's public schools for any one between the ages of 16 and 21. Offering several different courses to any one with under 13 credits from prior schooling, FCH provides a positive opportunity for at risk teens and young adults. Two of our interviewees that recently discussed the quality of life in Fairhill, both graduated from programs offered at the high school.
Located on North Fourth Street, the high school offers various courses ranging from special education to college prep. Looking at the building from the sidewalk, it isn't easily recognizable as a high school. However, behind closed doors are classes taught in multiple languages, upper class men proms, spelling bees and a daily extended, twelve month school year.
After 29 years running, Fairhill Community High School is best known in the neighborhood for its diverse population and positive, quality education. Currently enrolled students anticipate graduation August 6th, 2009.
