Kaliyah’s Spirit

Last Thursday as I stood on the side of the field taking pictures and video of the Cruz Cardinals playing the Romonita Rivera’s a young girl approached me. With big eyes and the cutest smile she looked up at me and asked if she could try, “I’m a tech person,” she said. I chuckled to myself and told her to stand in front of me to look through the screen. Within moments she was asking how to zoom and how to change the angle, I was in complete shock. Kaliyah, an 8-year-old, second grader at James R. Ludlow Elementary proceeded to tell me what makes a good shot. I thought it adorable that she knew these things and was confident enough to walk up to an adult and unearth her knowledge. When I asked her where she learned this, she told me she thinks she learned it in school.

Although I had to tell her to step back and be careful several times, Kaliyah truly entertained me the whole night with her knowledge of social things. Her maturity rose well above an 8-year-old. I told her she should be a photographer when she grows up but she wants to be a model because, “they make a lot of money.” She proceeded to tell me how she loved Chris Brown until “the scandal” which she explained to me (unfortunately) and that now she loves Beyonce.
