Roosevelt Boulevard: The Dangerous Game

When traveling through the Northeast part of Philadelphia, it almost impossible to ignore Roosevelt Boulevard. When stopping to ask anyone in the city about this busy road several words are repeated over and over again. Dangerous, unsafe, and scary are just some of those adjectives. According to http://www.city-data.com/ in 2008 there were 233 people involved in fatal car accidents in Philadelphia. Eighty-six of those people were killed. Even though this was down from the 117 fatalities it is still a high number. With two intersections on Roosevelt Boulevard (Red Lion and Grant) consistently making the AAA annual list of dangerous intersections in the United States, the city needed to find a solution.

The Philadelphia Parking Authority came up with a program to install red light cameras at several intersections. There are currently thirteen intersections in the city with cameras in place. Nine of those intersections are on Roosevelt Boulevard. Grant Ave, Rhawn St, Red Lion Rd, and Welsh Rd are some of the more frequently ticketed areas.

The parking authority recently released their annual report for the fiscal year 2008. There were a total of 92,826 citations given along with 6,408 warnings. This lead to a net income of almost $4 million for the city. The report also shows an overwhelming number of citations occurred late at night. With accident totals and citations still high, driving in the Northeast or any other part of the city is still a dangerous game.
