Fishtown Family Cries Out for Help

In Fishtown this past weekend, there were reports of about seven crimes within the neighborhood, ranging from theft to aggravated assault. Fishtown, normally seen as a close knit community with family oriented business, has seen its share of violence and crime on its streets. The thefts took place from around the 800 block of N. 5th Street, to the 1500 block of E Montgomery Ave. There were no reports of severe harm, but valuables of up to $200, were reported stolen.
Meanwhile, a Fishtown family is offering $5,000 as a reward for information on the murder of their son that took place about a year ago. The young man, Matt Novak, was helping his friends who had automobile trouble on 6th and Spring Garden. The vehicle broke down on the side of the road and Novak hopped into a car that was supposed to take him to get jumper cables. The young victim was shot by one of the passengers in the car and was pronounced dead at Hahnemann Hospital. A little over a year later, the grieving family is still searching for answers. The reward was placed in exchange for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the three men believed to be involved in the killing of the young Mr. Novak.
