Fishtown: Now Selling Vinyl and Coffee

It's hard not to expect something cool when you enter a building that has a mural of a cow and a giant record painted on it. Which is exactly what I thought when I walked into Milkcrate Cafe. Among the new chairs and twelve by twelve records hung on the wall stood Adam Porter, the owner of the cafe. His attitude was immediately friendly and positive. But more importantly, he was more than happy to talk. The inability to start a conversation is something I've noticed among the native Fishtowners. They can sense your unfamiliarity with the neighborhood and it takes about a half an hour to move past one word answers. But Porter opened up about his cafe like no other person I have interviewed so far. And I found it really refreshing.

Porter's cafe is also unlike any other cafe in Fishtown. It's a record store and a cafe. He calls it "The original social networking." Porter also plans to have live bands on the weekends, ramping up the typical cafe crowd. Also, he is catering to several special dietary needs in the community including vegans, vegetarians and he will also offer gluten free food. It's nice to see a change in the typical coffee and couch routine that is too often seen in neighborhood coffee shops. View Milkcrate Cafe's website and blog here.
