While researching the quality and availability of dental care in the Mantua/Parkside area – and talking to various community organizations and leaders about their efforts to make dental health a priority among residents – we came across the West Philadelphia Community Center, one of the area’s best local resources for health and education services.Child care director Jeff Krofchik, 36, filled us in on what the center has to offer – an early education center for children ages 1 to 5, an after-school program for kids and teens run by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, tutoring and GED classes and a full gymnasium with a stage and swimming pool.

The center, Krofchik explained, also strives to promote healthy behavior among the kids, teens and adults who use its facilities. In addition to providing healthy meals and snacks during its preschool and after-school programs, the center encourages its members to receive regular check-ups, provides information about health insurance and payment plans and places a strong emphasis on health education.
The West Philadelphia Community Center is located at 3512 Haverford Ave. and operated by the Caring People Alliance, which has been “serving children and strengthening families” since 1932, according to its Web site.
