South Philadelphia:Palumbo Recreation Center

Brian Conti kept a close eye on the grassy field as 7-year-old Daniel Elias and 6-year-old Justin McDaniel chased each around the baseball diamond at the Palumbo Recreation Center. He couldn’t help but laugh as the two boys ran excitedly on the field screaming and falling every few feet. Conti, the park’s supervisor ensures that the children are always supervised while playing at the park.

“This is a great place for kids to play,” says Conti, “these kids need a place to go and when they come here they’re safe and off the streets. I’d rather see them playing here than wondering the streets”.
The Palumbo Recreation Center, located at 10th and Fitzwater in the Bella Vista neighborhood offers recreation opportunities for children and teens. The center encompasses a playground, baseball diamond, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, a weight room and fields for soccer, football or and various other activities.

Nacassi White, a mother of three says she appreciates Palumbo because she knows that her children are less likely to get in trouble when they have a fun and safe environment to go to after school and during the summer break.

“It gives me peace of mind to know that these kids are cared for like they’re all one big family” White said, “my kids love gong there and I love sending them there.
