Mitchell and Ness, established in 1904, is the oldest sporting goods company in Philadelphia. It was founded by Frank P. Mitchell and Charles M. Ness. Mitchell and Ness sold mainly golfing and tennis equipment at first, but then decided to specialize in uniform sales where the business began to grow. Whether on the high school level or professionally, Mitchell and Ness became a familiar brand to people around the Philadelphia area. Teams like the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Athletics both went to Mitchell and Ness for their uniforms during the 1930's.
Today Mitchell and Ness sells jerseys for not only the NFL and MLB, but for the NBA and NHL as well. They also sell a wide variety of fitted hats and hoodies which have become popular recently among buyers. Sales have expanded from the local level to worldwide where many celebrities and athletes such as actor Terrance Howard and rap artist Rick Ross have been seen buying threads. Joel also explained how even though Mitchell and Ness has spread its sales worldwide, it still holds a strong connection at the local level.
"We had a customer in today who told us about how when he was a little kid playing baseball, Mitchell and Ness used to make his uniform. We have a lot of customers who have been with us for a long time...almost every customer who's been with us for more than ten years has a story."
In the spirit of the Philadelphia Flyers recent success, the Mitchell and Ness store in Philadelphia at 1318 Chestnut Street is now selling classic Flyers jerseys at half-price. The jerseys which originally sold at $300 can be bought at a more affordable $150. For more information visit http://www.mitchellandness.com/ or call the store at 215-765-0612.
