West Philadelphia: A Unique Café

The Golden Standard Café sits on the corner of 48th and Baltimore in West Philadelphia. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the spot is surrounded by small tables occupied by people enjoying coffee and a small lunch.

Upon entering the café you are greeting with the smell of fresh coffee and a big smile from the barista working behind the counter. There are many food choices, including delicious looking baked goods such as pecan pie, strawberry rhubarb crisp, and tiramisu.

Despite the tempting sweets taunting us from behind the glass window, Kim and I split a tomato, roasted-red peppers, chives and jack quiche. The day was way to hot for coffee, plus we both felt a little dehydrated, so Kim ordered a delicious, freshly brewed raspberry iced tea, while I went for a mango passion fruit one.

We sat down at a small bar to drink our tea and wait for our quiche. Facing us was a bulletin board with posters advertising local art shows, dog walkers, house cleaners, and even an adoption ad. After looking at the board, we realized exactly how eccentric and interesting the establishment is.

Our quiche was delivered, we devoured it, finished our tea and continued to explored West Philly.
