Once summer comes to a close, Port Richmond residents line up outside of various shops on Richmond Street to sell assortments of trinkets. The sales take place once or twice a month, depending on the level of interest, from September until the end of November when the weather starts to get too cold.

Port Richmond Books may not always have a table set up or make flyers advertising their bookstore, but one thing is certain, everyone in Port Richmond knows about the bookstore and most residents also know and love the owner, Greg Gillespie. Gillespie owns Books, which used to be a movie theater but now is home to the only Irish bookstore in Port Richmond, a predominantly Polish neighborhood.
Gillespie has many books about Ireland and Irish culture, but that is only a glimpse into one section of his store. Unlike most conventional bookstores, Gillespie does not have any rhyme or reason to how his store is set up. There is no card catalog or labels on the aisles. Instead, there are piles upon piles of various genres of books stacked up between aisles and aisles of more books.
“Half the fun of owning a good book is the journey it takes to find it,” Gillespie says as he rummages through one pile of books. “We’re a little unorganized here,” he adds.
The books in the store range from pop-up star wars books and novels from famous Irish writers and other anthologies. The fact that Gillespie has a book for every type of person guarantees and enforces his ability to keep this small Irish bookstore alive for many years to come.
