Walnut Hill: YMCA West

The YMCA West sits between 51st and 52nd and Chestnut. Less than a hundred yards from the McDonalds on the corner, the Y is located on the right side of the street. Business was in full swing around 11 o'clock a.m. The 2010 fall class schedule brought out residents from all over the Walnut Hill area. Many residents during these hours chose to take part in the water yoga class offered.

Kashief Butler is a 20-year old resident of Walnut Hill. He is a member of the YMCA under the family membership package. Today he came to the “Y” to lift weights and do some personal training. Butler has been a member of the Y for several years.

The atmosphere was quiet for the most part. The hours I went to the facility may have contributed to this. It was a week -day and children are in school. Butler said the “Y’ is a family atmosphere. Many of the classes cater to people of all ages. As I was walking around I noticed both male and female sitting in the chairs waiting to sign up for memberships. The different times for the classes allow for flexibility for different schedules. The classes give the residents a chance to stay healthy and partake in activities that are fun and timely.
