Hunting Park: 'Community Pet Day' Headed to Hunting Park

"The Sarge Fund", a non-profit organization brought about through the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, will host a “Community Pet Day” in Hunting Park on October 23rd.

The idea of the event is to not only educate dog owners on proper care, training and overall awareness but provide subsidized services as well. These include vouchers for discounted microchips, vaccinations and spay/neuter surgery services that will greatly help many of the community’s dog
owners.

“That’s what 'The Sarge Fund' is all about, bringing affordable and accessible pet care to everybody. That includes elders who may not be able to drive to a shelter or a vet to get their services,” says Kim Wolf, founder of organization.

The fund is named after Sarge, a 16-year-old pit bull rescued from an abusive home in 2008. Sarge now serves as a liaison for the organization, making appearances at different animal awareness
events.

For Wolf, Sarge’s owner, "The Sarge Fund" and “Community Pet Days” are important for neighborhoods
such as Hunting Park because the events provide youth and adults alike, an understanding of dogs which will hopefully lead to a decrease in not only animal violence and cruelty but the number of stray dogs roaming the streets.

“Issues surrounding dogs don’t just affect dog owners, they affect everybody,” she says.

She also hopes that events such as “Community Pet Days” will influence community officials to lend their support.

“I think it’s all about getting the messages out there, working with politicians, community leaders, residents, all working together and not only getting the issue on the map but showing that all these issues are more inter-related than we think.”
