Germantown Deaf Ministries Fellowship held their annual Anti-violence Fun and Game night on October 29 from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Germantown Friends Meeting House, 31 W. Coulter St.
"Germantown Deaf Ministries Fellowship is a non-profit community based organization that works with the deaf and the hearing community to improve communication within their family,"
Rosalind (Roz) McKelvey, director, said. "We want people to learn to sign in a fun way."
Activities included sudoku, UNO, bowling, basketball and crafts. Everyone who attended learned to sign "My name is and then spell their name out in sign language." (This was one of the few times I shortened my name to Sue.")
One of the craft activities included GYMP, a long narrow piece or cord or fabric that are interweaved to make beauithful braids.
The concept behind GYMP is that "Everyone is a single piece of cord or strand. It is only when we become interwined with other people or socialized and interact with other people that we become something beauithful. You can't do it alone, " Dorthea Simpkson said.
Participants also learned to sign words such as cake, chicken, beans, juice, fork and spoon etc. Everyone enjoyed a warm meal with chicken, rice, salad, apples, bananas, coffee, tea, apple juice and other healthy items.
After the meal McKelvey used a pumpkin and a flashlight to show how God is the light within each of us. But sometimes, he may cut us or make us suffer so that others may see God's light. She also handed out glow sticks to everyone and said "sometimes its necessary to shake the devil off."
Even though upon entering the room it was quiet there was a lot activity and excitement in the room. The best part was seeing young children interact with other children or adults who were deaf. After the sermon, everyone sang and signed "Happy Birthday" to Frances Sydney.
